Key Areas
for  Food Security
  Africa (905):

If you're working on food security issues in Africa, I think you'll find this collection of resources very helpful. And if you have a report or information about your own organization that you would like to add, get in touch. My name is Joseph Mutuku and I'm writing my masters thesis in food science and nutrition at Jomo Kenyatta University. See my entry in the Food Security Directory for more details ("Directory" on the right-hand side of the site) or e-mail me at joemtuku@yahoo.com
  Agriculture and Rural Development (2076):

  Biotechnology and GMOs (496):

The debate over genetically modified crops is caught between European consumers and modern agriculture (of the total land planted with transgenics, the US has 72%, Argentina 17%, Canada 10%). The real losers may well be the farmers of LDCs. Over 30% of their crops can be lost to insects and diseases. GMOs can improve production and nutrition, why the resistance to adoption? How to pit the benefits over the potential harms? How to focus on tropical-zone crops? Further testing and monitoring is needed. But how to protect intellectual property rights?
  Emergencies (601):

Food aid and humanitarian assistance can address short term food insecurity. Under this key issue you will find some information sources and tools: from news, to appeals, CAPS, HARP, the Sphere Guidelines, some lessons learned, NGO and donor web pages, and more.

The 3rd World Water Forum runs from March 16-23, 2003, and food security is of course high on the agenda. See also the Gateway special on water with coverage of 8 development topics ranging from environmental law to gender as well as thousands of water projects from the AiDA project database.

View resources from last year's big event, "The World Food Summit: Five Years Later", which took place in Rome from June 10-13, 2002. Available are a selection of key resources, both critical and favourable, from a variety of sources.
