Collated Paper on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change
The consultant’s report recommends that Parties to the Convention and Governments may wish to consider, as far as possible and as appropriate, introducing necessary measures, administrative as well as legislative measures, to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change on vulnerable indigenous and local communities, and especially the harmful impact climate change posses to indigenous and local communities’ traditional knowledge, innovations and practices relevant to conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The most advanced scientific research has concluded that changes in climate will gravely harm the health of their traditional lands and waters and that many of the plants and animals upon which they depend for survival will be threatened by the immediate impacts of climate change.
